My top 5 spots of Lovely Leitrim

I might be a bit biased but I feel very much at home in Leitrim. Oddly I have more childhood memories of visiting my grandad in Mohill than I recall my dad’s home place. It was probably the connection of my only surviving grandparent but visiting Leitrim has always given me a sense of peace. I’ve explored it througout the years and wanted so share the favourite spots that I’ve found so far.

1. Loch Rynn Castle
Wether you want to take a stroll round the gardens or indulge in the afternoon tea or even an overnight stay this is a must on my trips to Leitrim. There is something beautifully decedent about the place yet down to earth to be relaxing even with the kids.

2. Arigna Mines
I saw a picture of the view from the cafe and decided one day I wanted to visit. The twins were small at the time but its a child friendly experience. The kids loved and we were really taken care of. And the lunch after looking out over the valley is totally worth the drive. My first visit totally inspired me and Angie’s, a lady with local roots, produced a tea pot shed purchased in my shop. Her style and ideas were brought back to Belmullet and I hope she feels we did them justice. The cafe has changed hands since but the food is as delicious and the view ever amazing.

3. An Caife Bia Slainte
In the heart of Manorhamilton the name says it all and even my basic Irish can figure that out. It has a relaxed vibe and a slightly hippy feel. The food is delicious and well priced and there are great options for Vegetarians and Vegans. I often stop here on my way to Belfast and detour here when I can.

4. Leitrim Design House
Carrick-on-Shannon has become well know for the Hen and Stag river cruises but the Design House has been going for much longer. A lovely shop that sells Irish design and craft and you know I can never resit that.

5. The Glenview Folk Museum
The museum consists of many different attractions from old household & farm items to vehicles and a full street scene which has been fully reconstructed to really give you a feel for 1930s Ireland. The kids love looking at all this stuff and while they can’t appreciate the historical significance realise its all stuff granddad used to use when he was a child.
