3 simple things to change your year

So in a former life I worked as an Executive and Leadership coach and I did a lot of work with people and teams to achieve goals, plan projects and and achieve potential. I dusted off my skills and we had a inspirational hour of taking time out and thinking about what to do for the year. A few people asked me to send the templates so I thought I would post them here if they can be of inspiration to anyone else. So how does it work?

When you start the year, you set a news year’s resolution usually a big goal which is great. The bigger the goal the better because. If its massive you might not get to it but you might do more. Say you want to save €3,000 you might make plans and get to €2,000 which is great. But if you set a goal for €6,000 you might only get to €4,000 (1/3 of your goal) but you’ve smashed the €3,000. So think about your goals, then double them!!

The problem comes when we say on the 1st of Jan I want to save €6,000 and often it’s so over whelming that within a few weeks it’s fallen to the side. Only about 20% of us actually keep our resolutions. So today we thought about our huge goals and did some simple exercises to set ourselves up for success.

There first step is to make the goals, something specific and know the reason why you want to do it and think about how you will feel if you achieve it. This will really help with your motivation.

Here’s an example:
You want to loose weight but how will you know when you’ve achieved your target? You need to set a measurable target, something like lose 1.5 stone in 2020. Remembering what we said before, you double it! You want to lose 3 stone by the end of the year.
Why? So your not over weight and setting a good example for your kids and you can wear nice clothes.
How will I feel? More energetic, more confident and new wardrobe in a smaller dress size.
Start Point – 12 stone, End Point – 9 stone by December, Mid year milestone 10.5 stone

The next step is to break the goals into smaller monthly targets. In the example above you are aiming for 3 stone in 12 months, that’s 42 lbs. If you break that into 12 month it’s 3.5 lbs per month so less than 1 lb per week. You might have an event or a wedding in a particular month and want to drop a dress size by then. Or you may know that in August you are going to an all inclusive resort so it’s unlikely you’ll lose 3.5 so you might want to aim for 4lbs in the few months before it.

If you want to change your job you might know that you are too busy at your current job to be able to spend much time on it in a certain month. You may need to do some training so you’ll want to get that booked as it may only run a scheduled times.

This is about really thinking about your goal and breaking it down into smaller steps, putting it monthly targets that are realistic and achievable.

Then the final step is the breaking your monthly target into daily actions! I made this all in one monthly template that means I can break down each goal for the month and I can set tasks each day. If you do a little each day it will move you forward without feeling like there is a mountain to climb. Again be realistic if you’ve got family coming for the weekend do expect to get loads done but you might want to schedule in a few small things that you can do on the phone in bed before you get up. Every little counts.

These can be used for any big project, your business or yourself. Please feel free to download and if you’d like any help email hello@lunasa.co or post a comment.
